The only Chicago team down here is De La Salle (Mike Shaw, Alex Foster), but there are plenty of other outstanding teams here from across the nation including Findlay Prep (#1 in the nation), Winter Park (Austin Rivers), St. Benedicts (#4 in the nation), and many other great ones.
If you want to watch the City of Palms games streamed live, click HERE

Hello Illinoishsbasketball viewers, Coach Walter Woghiren Varsity Basketball Assistant at Rich South High School. I write to you on the week that I consider the” Litmus Test” week for the Rich South basketball team. We are working hard this week preparing for a challenging opponent in the Crete Monee Warriors this Friday at Rich South (Dec. 11th) to open up conference play. Since the last time I have written our team has been able to play 5 games of basketball. After 5 games we currently hold a record of 4-1. The lone loss coming to a well disciplined and executing Glenbrook North in the Championship of the Niles West Tournament. In those 5 games we have played teams with contrasting styles and game plans, and as we come away from those games we feel we have been able to look good at times, but we still feel we need to clean up certain aspects of our game if we want to be successful. One of the most critical, and probably most important is our mental endurance. We strive on being and continuing evolution of being smart basketball players for 32 minutes night in and night out.We stress the importance of the way we react to adverse situations, in basketball and in life things don’t always go the way you would like them to, but the way you respond to those situations helps define you as a person or as a team. As stated earlier I called this week a “Litmus Test” for us. Litmus test (for some young student athletes who may not know) is a common ph test used to test the potency of a chemical or substance. So this week of preparation in practice and the game against #1 Team in South Suburbs Crete Monee will gives us a good idea of how potent of a team we are. That following day we travel down to The University of Illinois to participate in the Shootout at the Hall against a good Champaign Central team, so after this week of basketball we at Rich South should have a pretty good idea of this team and its identity. Until next time Coach Walt signing off….

Jabari Parker (Simeon, 2013) Picks Up Kansas Offer
Chicago Hoops
October 9, 2009
Class of 2013 Chicago Simeon star Jabari Parker of the Mac Irvin Fire
has added a scholarship offer from Kansas University to his
fast-growing collection. Parker rates as one of the top Class of 2013
basketball prospects in the country.
Parker, who stands 6'6", is a highly versatile all-around
talent who excels with an incredibly high basketball I.Q. He is coming
off of a superb run on the travel team circuit with saw him team with
Thomas Hamilton (Chicago Whitney Young) to lead the Fire to a 5th place
finish at the 14-U AAU National Tournament.
Thornton senior guard Reggie Smith never doubted the high-majors would
eventually come around to his ability. He just didn't think they'd
begin to do so when he was injured.
Heading into the summer, Smith was a hot commodity among mid-major
programs. With his athleticism, ball handling and scoring ability,
Smith was a lock to be a combo guard in the MAC, Missouri Valley or
elsewhere.
The bigger schools hesitated from going after him
because they weren't sold he could pass the ball and play the point.
With Smith being only 5-11, they saw him as a risk.
High school basketball season doesnt officially begin until
Thanksgiving but the groundwork for a successful season often begins in
fall leagues. Fall leagues are now commonplace for high school
basketball, with many leagues offering high school teams the chance to
play with each other before practice officially begins Nov. 9.
The South Suburban Fall League is only in its first year of play,
but features plenty of talent and a team consisting of five key players
from state heavyweight Neuqua Valley. After a 31-2 season and a
disappointing loss to Dundee-Crown in the Class 4A DeKalb
Supersectional, the Wildcats are looking for a trip downstate.
Head coach Rick Majerus,
Porter Moser and St. Louis University have come into the state of
Illinois, and scored another recruiting coup, and have landed Class of
2010 Chicago Foreman star Mike McCall of the Illinois Heat. McCall
rates as one of the top 2010 basketball prospects in the state of
Illinois.
McCall, a 6'1" point guard, is a dazzling backcourt talent who
excels with his versatility on the basketball court. McCall is
super-quick with the basketball, and is extremely difficult to guard
one-on-one. McCall is also a highly unselfish player who is comfortable
playing both on, and off of the basketball, and is a player who has a
soft touch on his jumper which he knocks down with three-point range.

Coach Walt Journal #3: Discipline
At
Illinoishsbasketball.com we do not just look for the top up and coming
basketball players, we also are on the lookout for the future elite basketball
coaches, and one of our favorites is Walter Woghiren. He is one of the most
promising young basketball coaches I've seen because of his knowledge for the
game, work ethic, and commitment to helping young people. He is the assistant
coach for Rich South High School, one of the favorites to win the state title
this year, and he is one of our absolute favorite journal writers of all time.
Walt
usually writes about his team, but this journal is much, much different. At
IllinoisHSbasketball we like to make it a mission to do all we can to
positively affect the lives of young athletes, and provide knowledge and information
that can help them in their path to success. Walt and I (Daniel Poneman) worked
very hard to put together an essay that is very informative and enlightening
for young athletes in hopes that some kids will read it and take our messages
to heart. This essay is one that I strongly encourage all players, coaches, and
parents to read closely because everybody has something they can learn from it.
If one young persons life is altered because of this knowledge then we have
done our job, and hopefully it wont be just one person who is affected by this
extraordinary and insightful knowledge. Please read this carefully and we
strongly encourage you to share this essay with as many people as you can, and
make our Karmic impact that much more profound. Without further ado...

I have coached
basketball at many different levels; from grammar schools, to high
schools, and even coaching college and professional basketball players in
summer tournaments. With that being stated, in my time coaching and
observing and analyzing everything going on around me I have noticed a
growing trend that I would like to talk about. Whether I’m coaching
players at these levels or observing as a fan, coaches today spend too
much time having to discipline players, and in turn it takes away from the
coaching and teaching of the game of basketball. I have to single out today’s youth
as a whole because I’ve noticed it in them more so than I do in
athletes out of high school. Some of the things I see in today’s game of
basketball embarrasses me as an individual whose personal identity is tied to
the game that I love. Things such as the very selfish act of a
player showing bad sportsmanship because they are being
subbed out of the game, yelling or going back and forth
with a coach, and last but not least taking from the game but
not giving anything back.
